Established in 1941 as a lending library, which in time developed into a bookshop, by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., on the initiative of its then Chairman, D.R. Wijewardene and Company Secretary, E.E.C. Abayasekera, the Lake House Bookshop has its Main Shop now located at No. 100, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 00200 and it is the most prestigious bookshop in Sri Lanka, as well as being easily the best-known Sri Lankan bookshop internationally. The Bookshop is registered as the Lake House Bookshop (Pvt.) Ltd. and its registered address is No. 41, W.A.D. Ramanayake Mawatha, Colombo 00200.
We are affiliated to the reputed Singaporean company Stamford Press and we are a leading distributor of Stamford Lake (Pvt.) Ltd., its publications arm in Sri Lanka. Stamford Lake is successor to the publications division of Lake House Investments, just as the Lake House Bookshop (Pvt.) Ltd. is successor to the bookselling division of the same company.
The Bookshop has been the exclusive news-stand distributor for TIME and FORTUNE in Sri Lanka from 1996 and exclusive Sri Lankan subscription and news-stand agent for Business Traveller Asia-Pacific magazine for even longer. We were also the exclusive Sri Lankan agent for ASIAWEEK from it’s inception in 1974 up to its closure in late 2001.
We are the exclusive agent in Sri Lanka for Practical Action Publications, U.K. (formerly I.T.D.G.) and Commonwealth Secretariat Publications, U.K. and the only bookshop with distribution rights for Asian Development Bank (A.D.B.) publications. Leading car and vehicle book publishers, Haynes’s titles are imported to Sri Lanka only through The Lake House Bookshop.
